Local Government Support
The Local Government Support Division operates in co-operation with local authorities and other local government organisations to enable partnerships to best realise the value of their supply of recyclate (recyclable materials). The division researches and provides information on new technologies for waste treatment and after-use and green procurement initiatives. It also serves to provide a bridge between the public and private sector.
Following its successful “Partnerships in Waste” initiative in 1999, The Wales Environment Trust Ltd has funded two separate studies for Local Authority partnerships in South-East and South-West Wales, within which the benefits and options for Local Authority co-operation in respect of waste management have been examined.
As an outcome of the SE Wales Study, 10 Local Authorities in the region have funded the appointment of the South-East Wales, Regional Waste Strategy Co-ordinator based at The Wales Environment Trust head office (South-Wales). The co-ordinator will fulfil the role of developing regional recycling strategies for the group of Local Authorities.
Additionally, The Wales Environment Trust Ltd is acting in support of 14 Local Authorities in Wales in the co-ordination of an “all-Wales” fridge recycling tender procedure.
Our Eco-park concept which provides a sustainable replacement for landfill sites in meeting the requirements of the Landfill Directive, is one of the cross cutting themes that links this service area to our work on developing markets for recyclate through The CWMre Initiative.
