Following the opening of a new Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in north Pembrokeshire, many companies across West Wales will now be able to recycle their waste material diverting it away from landfill, reducing the impact of climate change and creating ‘Wealth from Waste'.

Opened today by Jane Davidson Minister for the Environment, Sustainability and Housing at Boncath, near Cardigan, the family run initiative will have the capacity to every year divert a huge 25,000 tonnes of waste cardboard, plastics, cans and paper from landfill.

The facility has been set up by Andrew and Sonia Jenkins with support from the Wales Environment Trust and has been partially funded by the Welsh Assembly Government, Materials Action Programme.

Andrew Jenkins, director of AJ Recycling, is confident it will be a great success.
“I am very proud to be able to offer this much needed facility to such a rural area, and hope it will be of great benefit to our present and future customers. We are very excited by the new venture, and hope it will be fully utilised to assist with the environmental targets. This facility has been able to offer much need employment within the community and safeguard existing jobs”

A J Recycling stems from a family run business with a history of agricultural work spanning four generations. A J Recycling Ltd was established in 2000.and started business collecting and processing used tyres. This expanded in scope to include other recyclables from commerce and industry, retail and agriculture. The business now provides its services to a customer list of 300 businesses and organisation's throughout Wales and the west of England. These include prestigious contracts with Pembrokeshire, Carmarthen, Ceredigion, and Swansea City Council's. AJ also supplies rubber crumb products to agriculture including its trademarked SILOSEAL.

Jane Davidson said, “Waste and landfill reduction is key to fighting climate change. Reducing waste at source, and increasing the proportion that is recycled, is good for the planet and it's good for Wales.”

“The imperatives of tacking climate change and “Three Planet Living” mean that we must all strive harder and faster to implement the changes in lifestyle and businesses practices that are necessary. This means a lot more effort on waste minimisation and a lot more effort on recycling.”

Ms Davidson added, “I am delighted to be here today to officially open this programme and would like to congratulate AJ Recycling on its success in helping to fight climate change.”

The Wales Environment Trust has been working with Andrew and Sonia at AJ for 6 years offering assistance with a number of initiatives as the business has grown.

Evette Thomas, Business Development Manager at Wales Environment Trust, said:

“We are delighted to have been able to support this project to provide the environmental infrastructure needed for Wales to achieve its tough waste management targets. We sincerely expect the project to be a great success and look forward to helping more facilities of this type open across Wales.”
