Mineral Wastes, Recycled and Secondary Aggregates
The Welsh Assembly Government promotes the minimisation of waste and the use of recycled materials, mineral waste, and industrial by-products, as aggregates to reduce the demand for the production of primary resources.
Large quantities of waste, which arise in Wales, are currently disposed of to landfill and take up significant space.
The Welsh Assembly's sustainable development scheme emphasised the need to minimise waste arisings. To this end, they have has funded the Wales Environment Trust's Aggregate Programme, through the Aggregates Levy Sustainable Fund, to:
· Reduce the quantity of waste being placed in landfill.
· Assist Civil Engineers and Local Authorities to identify and use recycling facilities in preference to landfill.
· Assist recycling companies to recover the maximum amount of aggregates from their waste streams.
· Maximise the value of the recycled aggregates, by achieving the highest possible specification.
· Develop markets for recycled aggregates by liaising with specifying bodies and procurement officers to gain acceptance of recycled aggregates as the preferred option to virgin materials.
